The largest celebration of World Sake Day outside of Japan is almost here. This Saturday (September, 29th), Beau Timken and his team at True Sake in San Francisco host the 13th annual iteration of their Sake Day SF event, an ever-evolving festival showcasing all things sake. We’ve been attending for five years and can affirm that it’s one of the better sake festivals we’ve been to anywhere in the world. The overall quality of the sake selections is high. If you love sake, or if you’re curious and hoping to expand your horizons, this event should be well worth your time and money.
This year, Hotel Kabuki in San Francisco’s Japan Town will be hosting the festivities. Producers from all over Japan as well as North America will be in attendance, serving over 200 different kinds of sake, some of it rare and/or brought in specially for the event. $80 allows you to sample everything, and you can later order bottles of varieties that you like. True Sake will ship it right to your house.
Part of the appeal, again, is that so many producers will be there. It’s an opportunity to ask questions, deepen your knowledge and form bonds with industry folks. You can even give them some feedback if you like; many welcome both praise and criticism alike. That’s just part of the business of improving the product. There will also be “sake education stations” where you can learn from knowledgeable sake professionals. Each year, there are also a few surprises like interesting food-pairing opportunities. Sake Today will be running a table and we hope to see you there!
