One of Japan’s best off-the-beaten-track travel destinations is Shimane, located on Japan’s quiet, rural West Coast. The prefecture also has amazing sake, as we reported in issue #17. Even earlier, in issue #2, we wrote in detail about its beautiful capital city, Matsue.
This Sunday, the sake brewers guild of Shimane is hosting a special “local sake fair” in Osaka. It’s an annual affair, the first part of which already took place in Tokyo several weeks ago. Kansai-area residents and visitors now have a chance to sample dozens of fine sake selections spanning the gamut of style and flavor from 20 breweries. Some of the more widely known breweries include Rihaku and Yoneda Shuzo (Toyo-no-aki), though the lesser known ones will surely be serving crowd-pleasers as well.
Entry to the event is a mere ¥1000 (about $10USD). The festivities kick off at 4pm and last until 6pm (last entry at 5:30pm) at the Kokuminkaikan main hall (Chuo-ku, Otemae 2-1-2-12F). The venue is just a few minute’s walk from Temmabashi Station. Drink appropriately and have fun!
